In 754, Boniface was killed during a missionary journey in Frisia and was later venerated as a martyr.

After his death, the missionary’s body was transported in a solemn funeral procession from Mainz to Fulda. The historic route also passed through today’s Wetterau region – and thus through Bad Vilbel-Dortelweil.
