Guided city tours in Bad Vilbel

Discover Bad Vilbel – personally guided. Unforgettable experiences.

Bad Vilbel is full of stories. Between Roman mosaics and modern architecture, between half-timbered houses, springs and river, there’s plenty to discover – best explored on foot and with a great guide.

Our guided city tours get to the heart of history: told in an engaging way, expertly presented, and with a feel for what makes it special. Whether at one of the public dates (see insert) or booked individually – we’ll show you Bad Vilbel at its very best.

If you want to make more of your day, you can easily combine the tour – for example with a visit to the Bad Vilbel Castle Festival, Hesse’s largest open-air theatre festival. In cooperation with the city’s ticket office, we’ll be happy to help you plan.

A full day programme? No problem. Together with the Tourist Info at Stadtmarketing Bad Vilbel, we put together the right all-in package for groups.

Experience history. Discover stories. See the city anew.

Bad Vilbel tells its story at every turn – and our themed tours take you straight to the most exciting chapters: its Roman past and spa heritage, the mineral water industry, Jewish history, public art, geology, garden culture, graffiti, and remarkable personalities.

Whether on public dates or as a group tour on your preferred date: we’ll show you Bad Vilbel from unusual perspectives – well-founded, lively, and with a joy for storytelling.

City walk for the curious

An ideal introduction to over 1,250 years of city history. The walk takes you from the origins in the Old Town through the historic centre with town hall, moated castle and spa park, all the way to the modern city centre with the award-winning city library above the Nidda and the new VILCO town hall – an exciting arc between tradition and new beginnings.

Old Town tour

Alleys, squares, fountains – and the stories they tell: in the historic Old Town, you’ll encounter traces from centuries past. Our guides – on request also in historical costume – bring history (and stories) to life.

Castle tour – around and through the moated castle

One of Hesse’s most beautiful moated castles – and the cultural heart of the city. The tour tells of its early history as a Wildhube, of destruction and rebuilding, of the robber baron Bechtram and the siege of 1399 – and of life with and in the castle today: as the venue for the popular Bad Vilbel Castle Festival, as a sculpture park, and as an atmospheric cultural centre.

Jewish life in Bad Vilbel

This tour sheds light on the history of the Jewish community – from everyday life and religious practice to systematic persecution under National Socialism. Stops include the Jewish cemetery, the so-called Judengasse, the site of the former synagogue, and Stolpersteine that make personal fates visible.

Water Experience Trail – along the Nidda

Bad Vilbel lives from water – and by it. The walk follows the Nidda, the city’s historic lifeline, and leads past springs, renaturalised riverbanks, fascinating bridge structures and places where Vilbel’s mineral and medicinal water shaped its history. A stroll between nature, engineering and the culture of this bubbling element.

The Rothe Horst – discover geology

What connects the moated castle with the colour red? The answer lies in the Rotliegend – a sandstone formation that forms the “Rothen Horst” and has been important since Roman times for construction, trade and later the mineral springs. The tour takes you through quarries, biotopes, orchards and an often overlooked geological heritage.

Graffiti in the city centre

Bad Vilbel shows its colours: on this tour you’ll encounter impressive graffiti artworks in public spaces – from detailed portraits to large-scale murals with a message. You’ll learn more about the artists, backgrounds, techniques and the creative dialogue between the city and street art.

Siesmayer and the spa park

From the rise to a Europe-wide renowned gardening dynasty to a spectacular bankruptcy during the Great Depression: the story of the Siesmayer brothers is a gripping family chronicle. The walk takes you through the listed spa park – with stories of plants, prestige and pioneering spirit.

Sculptures at the castle

An art-historical walk through the sculpture park around the moated castle. At its centre is the installation “Paradise” by Stephan Guber – a poetic series of figures with a partly mystical feel. It is complemented by numerous works by other artists, making art and history tangible in the open air.

Trees and shrubs in the arboretum

In the spa park and castle park, trees grow with stories: discover unique woody plants from around the world, from the service tree and Zoeschener maple to the Berlin laurel poplar – with fascinating insights into natural history and cultural heritage.

Bloody Good Friday – Battle of Bergen and Vilbel, 1759

On April 13, 1759, one of the bloodiest battles of the Seven Years’ War raged near Vilbel. The tour brings the historic sites to life and tells of the fate of the city, its citizens – and the traces still visible today.

The Vilbeler Höhe – from military training ground to neighbourhood

Once the Vilbeler Höhe, as today’s Heilsberg district used to be called, was a military training area. Later it became a new home for many people. The tour tells of immigration, housing development, post-war history and the transformation of an entire neighbourhood.

Through Vilbel with a train and corset

Cäcilie Brod – wife of spa director Carl Brod – takes you through the Vilbel of her time in historical costume: spa town, new beginnings, prosperity – and a dramatic fall. A walk full of insights into social change around 1900.

Gold Rush: The Water Trade

How Bad Vilbel’s mineral water helped drive economic growth: the tour tells of the boom in the spring-water trade, the rise of major family businesses, exports around the world – and the changes brought by this bubbling wealth.

Night watchman tour

When darkness falls, the night watchman takes you on his round through the Old Town. By lantern light, he tells of curfews, chicken thieves and his role as protector of the citizens. You’ll learn what a “Zinken” is, why the thieves’ cant known as Rotwelsch was once feared – and how the night had rules of its own.

Tour of the historic town hall

A half-timbered jewel on the outside, a piece of living administrative history on the inside: the town hall from 1498 is one of the city’s oldest buildings – and to this day an official building with charm. The tour shows the historic timber framework, tells of former council meetings, renovations, a village fire and rebuilding – and invites you to take a seat in the old council chamber, where justice was once administered and history was made.

Tour of the Bad Vilbel Kurhaus

An elegant 1920s building, a place of tradition and change: the Bad Vilbel Kurhaus was long the centre of social life – from spa operations to dance events, from spa orchestra to local politics. The tour opens doors to historic halls, tells of guests and hosts, style and structural change – and shows how the Kurhaus is now shining again in new splendour.

For young explorers: children’s tours

There are dedicated tours for children up to around 12 years old – exciting, visual and child-friendly. Reading and writing skills are helpful, but not required.

Children’s tours – games and riddles by day

This age-appropriate tour for children aged 5 and up invites them to puzzle along, play along and discover. Exciting stops, simple explanations and plenty of movement make the city’s history tangible – also ideal for children’s birthday parties or school classes. On request, the tour can also be designed as a city rally.

Date & meeting point by arrangement

Torchlight tour – thrills at night

When it gets dark, the adventure begins: with torches, children explore the city, hear stories and experience Vilbel in a new way. Suitable from primary school age, with accompaniment or written permission. Please bring sturdy footwear and your own torch.

Three museums – three perspectives on Bad Vilbel

Discover, immerse yourself, be amazed: history up close

Whether antiquity, industrial heritage or village life – Bad Vilbel’s museums show the past in their own unique way: vivid, lively and surprisingly diverse. They make visible what has shaped the city: the water, the people, the landscape – and the stories behind the façades.

All three venues can be visited individually or explored as part of a guided tour – optionally with a thematic focus and combined with a city walk.
