Sculptures in the Massenheim Floodplain
The near-natural landscape of the Erlenbach floodplain is an open-air gallery where “floodplain art” is a permanent part of the townscape. Artists from the region and beyond present sculptures, three-dimensional works and installations that, in interplay with nature and the seasons, create ever-changing impressions.
A living exhibition
A special feature is its dynamic structure: individual works are regularly replaced, new focal points are set, or previously unused places are opened up. At the same time, many sculptures remain for years and thus shape the character of the walk along the Erlenbach. By purchasing selected works, the City of Bad Vilbel preserves individual exhibits permanently and makes them accessible to the public in the long term.
Artwork Undine II – created on site
Something special is the sculpture Undine II by Clemens M. Strugalla: so far, it is the only work created directly on site—from a Jurassic limestone around 200 million years old. Visitors were able to watch the work being created right there in the floodplain. Undine II is a prime example of the connection between artistic process, natural space and public encounter.
A vibrant space between art and landscape
Floodplain art opens up a dialogue between contemporary art and a landscape shaped over time. The stream, meadows and groups of trees are not just a backdrop, but active participants: water, light, weather and the seasons continually change how the works are perceived.
Encountering art
At the same time, a central idea of art in public space is reflected here: art meets people directly, without feeling intimidated, beyond traditional exhibition venues. It challenges, inspires and invites you to pause. In the Massenheim Floodplain, this happens in a particularly light, close-to-nature way: visitors can engage with it, discover something—or simply keep walking.
With floodplain art, a vibrant space for cultural encounters has emerged in Massenheim—supported by the commitment of the city, the artists, and many sponsors and supporters.
