An inkwell in the landscape
Münzenberg Castle is one of Germany’s most important Romanesque castle complexes. It dates back to the Hohenstaufen era. Even from afar, you can make out the two imposing keeps that gave it the nickname “the Wetterau inkwell”.
Even on the approach, you get a sense of what must have gone through travellers’ minds in the 13th century at the sight of it – a visit is a true journey into the Middle Ages.
The eastern keep can be reached via a sturdy staircase. The view from the tower over the cultural landscape of the Wetterau is impressive. The tower also contains a dungeon. There are guided tours on various topics and hands-on activities for every age group. Public castle tours take place every Sunday at 12 and 3 PM.
At Whitsun, the castle provides the backdrop for the medieval market with numerous hands-on activities.
Below the castle, the historic town centre forms a unique ensemble of late medieval and early modern buildings. Highlights include the stone town hall, the Protestant parish church, the hospital chapel and several Burgmannen courtyards. Historical guided tours invite you on a journey into the past.
