One of the finest Romanesque buildings in Hesse<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n

These relics from the Staufen era tell the story of the former monastery, which reached its heyday in the late Middle Ages thanks to estates, lease income and donations from the nobility. <\/p>\n

Founded in the 8th century as a manor farm by Konrad, a vassal of the Benedictine Abbey of Fulda, on a hill above the Nidder, it was converted into a castle complex around 1000\u2014only to be transformed into a monastery at the end of the 12th century, like many other castles.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”1\/2″][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner][vc_column_text]The still-imposing complex features representative, exquisite stonemasonry in a four-arched arcade.
